Move from Shopify Scripts to Shopify Functions
What Scripts were and what stopped
Shopify Scripts were small Ruby programs that stores wrote in the Script Editor app. They ran in the cart and at checkout. There were three kinds:
- Line item Scripts changed prices and gave discounts, for example "buy 2 get 10% off, buy 4 get 20% off" or BOGO.
- Shipping Scripts discounted, renamed, hid or reordered shipping rates.
- Payment Scripts renamed, hid or reordered payment methods.
On June 30, 2026, Shopify deprecated Scripts. Its Help Center says: "Any Scripts that were still published on your store have been deactivated and no longer work." There is no grace period left. If a Script ran a sale, that sale price is gone from your checkout today.
Some blog posts still describe the June 30, 2026 shutdown as coming. That date has passed. Shopify's own page now uses the past tense.
What Shopify Functions are
Shopify Functions are Shopify's replacement for Scripts. A Function is a small program that runs inside Shopify's checkout, for example "take 15% off when the cart has 3 totes". Three things differ from Scripts:
- Functions ship inside apps. You don't paste code into your store. You install an app, and you set the rule in your Shopify admin.
- Functions are faster. Shopify says they run in under 5 milliseconds, so they hold up during flash sales.
- Any plan can use them through public apps. Only Shopify Plus stores can run a Function from a custom app built just for them.
Shopify can
- Show a Scripts customizations report in your admin that lists the Scripts that were active before June 30, 2026, with links to matching apps and tutorials. Source: help.shopify.com
- Export that report as a CSV file. Source: help.shopify.com

- Run Functions from a custom app, on Shopify Plus only. Source: shopify.dev
Shopify can’t

- Convert a Script into a Function for you. Each customization you keep must be recreated with an app or your own Function. Source: help.shopify.com

Find the Scripts you still need
- In Shopify admin, go to Apps > Script Editor.
- In the Replace your Shopify Scripts banner, click Replace Shopify Scripts.
- In each section of the report (Payment gateways, Shipping, Product discounts), click a Script's name to see what it did.
- Mark the ones you still want. Skip any you no longer use: you don't need to rebuild them.
Three ways to rebuild a Script
1. Hire a developer to write a Function. A developer writes the logic in code (Shopify recommends Rust), packs it into an app and deploys it. You get exactly the rule you want. You also own that code: when the cart breaks during a sale, you pay to debug it. A custom app with Functions runs only on Shopify Plus.
2. Use an AI code generator app. Some apps write Function code from a prompt or a template. This is faster than hiring a developer. You still own the logic: someone has to read the generated rule, test it and fix it when it fails. Some of these apps also charge for AI credits on top of the plan.
3. Install a no-code app built on Functions. The app ships tested Functions, and you fill in a form. This is the fastest path when an app already covers your Script. It works on any plan. Its limit is the app's scope: it can't do a rule its form doesn't offer.
Pick by Script type. Discount Scripts usually fit path 3. Payment and shipping Scripts that rename, hide or reorder options need a different app or a developer.
Rebuild discount Scripts in Discount Genie
Discount Genie runs on Shopify Functions for discounts. You get the discount logic a developer would write as a custom Function, without code. It covers discount Scripts only. Here is how common Scripts map:
- "Buy 2 get 10% off, buy 4 get 20% off" (bulk or volume breaks) → a volume discount. The standard version is on the Free plan, with up to 5 breaks.
- "Spend $100 get 10% off, spend $200 get 20% off" → a tiered order discount. The standard version is on the Free plan.
- BOGO and "buy X get Y" → a Buy X Get Y discount. It has 5 variations: classic, by volume, by purchase amount, by cart subtotal and bundled pricing.
- % or $ off products with a tag → a product discount that targets a collection holding those products.
- VIP or wholesale price for tagged customers → any discount with a customer tag condition, for example includes any: VIP.
- Shipping discount Scripts ("free express over $100") → a shipping discount on all rates or the rates you pick.
- Free gift over a cart total → a gift with purchase discount (paid plans). Checkout blocks a free gift that no longer qualifies.
- Scripts that blocked discount codes during a sale → a rejection rule, on every plan including Free. You write the message the shopper sees.
Discount Genie does not rebuild payment or shipping Scripts that rename, hide or reorder options. For those, use a different app or a developer. Discount Genie hides payment methods only inside a payment-method discount, and hides delivery options only for a store-pickup offer.
Plans. Discount Genie has a Free plan. Paid plans cost $29.99, $59.99, $79.99 or $99.99 per month, each with a 7-day free trial. New stores pay $0.99 per month for the first 3 months on a monthly paid plan. The Scale plan (for Shopify Plus) includes help moving your Scripts logic into Discount Genie rules.
Test before you rely on it
- Rebuild one Script at a time, starting with the one that earns the most.
- Put a qualifying cart through checkout and check the price, then a cart that just misses the rule.
- Check how the new discount combines with your other discounts. See combine discounts.
- Only then promote the sale.
FAQ
When did Shopify Scripts stop working?
On June 30, 2026. Shopify deactivated every Script still published on a store, and those Scripts no longer run (Shopify Help Center).
What replaces Shopify Scripts?
Shopify Functions. They run inside apps, so you install an app and set rules in your admin instead of editing Ruby code. Public apps with Functions work on every Shopify plan.
Can Shopify convert my Scripts to Functions automatically?
No. Shopify's Scripts customizations report lists your old Scripts and suggests apps and tutorials, but you recreate each one yourself with an app or your own Function.
Do I need a developer to migrate discount Scripts?
Not for common discounts. Volume breaks, spend tiers, BOGO, tag-based pricing, shipping discounts and code blocking are ready rules in no-code apps like Discount Genie. You need a developer for logic no app offers.
Can Discount Genie replace my payment or shipping Scripts?
It rebuilds shipping discount Scripts. It doesn't run standalone payment or shipping rules that rename, hide or reorder options. For those, use a payment or shipping customization app, or a developer.
