Combine and stack discounts on Shopify

What Shopify does on its own

Every Shopify discount has a Combinations card. It lists the classes this discount may combine with: product, order and shipping discounts. Each item below links the Shopify page it comes from (checked 2026-10-23).

Shopify can

  • On every store, combine order + free shipping, product + free shipping, and product + product discounts on separate items. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Apply an automatic discount and a discount code to the same cart, when each one is set to combine with the other's class. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Accept up to 5 product or order discount codes plus 1 shipping discount code on one order. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Give a Buy X get Y discount its own Combinations setting. Source: help.shopify.com

Shopify can’t

  • Combine discounts automatically. A discount combines only after you allow it in its Combinations card. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Combine product + order or order + order discounts on every store. Only eligible stores get these: no checkout.liquid customizations and no Licensify app. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Stack two product discounts on the same item unless the store is on Shopify Plus. Source: shopify.dev
  • Apply more than one shipping discount to an order. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Let you choose which discount wins when two don't combine. Shopify always applies the best discount for the customer's cart. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Count an item already reduced by a combinable product discount toward a Buy X get Y minimum purchase amount. Source: help.shopify.com
  1. In Shopify admin, open Discounts and open the first discount.
  2. In the Combinations card, tick the class of the other discount: Product discounts, Order discounts or Shipping discounts.
  3. Click Save.
  4. Open the second discount and tick the first discount's class. Both discounts must allow each other, or Shopify applies only one.

When discounts do combine, Shopify applies product discounts first, then order discounts on the reduced subtotal, then shipping discounts (Shopify Help Center).

Why a discount won't apply with another

When two discounts can't combine, Shopify keeps the one that saves the customer more. What the shopper sees depends on how the discounts reach the cart:

  • A typed code meets another discount. Checkout shows Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts (Shopify Help Center). One merchant on the Shopify Community reported their cart showing A bigger automatic discount is applied! instead.
  • Two automatic discounts meet. Shopify always applies the best discount for the customer's cart (Shopify Help Center).
  • Both are set to combine, but only one applies. Check the class pair. A product + order pair needs an eligible store, and two product discounts on the same item need Shopify Plus.

Shopify also caps a store at 25 active automatic discounts (Shopify Help Center). For a step-by-step check of a discount that shows 0 uses, see My discount shows 0 uses or isn't applying.

Native Shopify stops here: on non-Plus stores you can allow or block a class, but you can't pick which two discounts stack or which discount Shopify keeps. On Plus you can pick only for product discounts on the same item, using matching tags (Shopify developer docs).

Combine offers with Discount Genie

Discount Genie passes each discount's Combinations setting straight to Shopify, so every rule above still applies. It can't override which discount Shopify keeps. The Combinations setting is on every plan, including Free. See Combine (stack) discounts.

Discount groups (paid plans) put several scenarios inside one discount. By default, the highest-priority group wins. The Discount groups behavior card changes that:

  • Allow multiple discount groups to apply. Several groups can apply in one cart, each to products an earlier group didn't already discount. You drag the groups into priority order. Turn on stacking to let two groups discount the same product.
  • Discount groups can stack (marked Danger zone). In product groups, percentages compound: 20% and 10% give 28% off, not 30%. Fixed amounts add up. A fixed amount and a percentage on the same line don't stack; the first one is kept.

Group stacking happens inside one Discount Genie discount. It doesn't change Shopify's rule for two separate product discounts on the same item, which still needs Shopify Plus.

Stacked groups can produce large discounts. Test the cart at checkout before you release the offer to customers.

To allow fewer than 5 codes, or to stop named codes from being used together, use rejection rules. They are on every plan, including Free.

FAQ

Why aren't my automatic discounts combining?

Both discounts must allow the other's class in their Combinations card. A product + order pair also needs an eligible store. When two automatic discounts don't combine, Shopify always applies the best discount for the customer's cart.

Can I use an automatic discount and a discount code on the same order?

Yes, if each one is set to combine with the other's class. If they aren't, the shopper who types the code sees Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts, and Shopify keeps the bigger saving.

Can two product discount codes apply to the same product?

Only on Shopify Plus. On other plans, two product discounts can combine on separate items in the cart, and on the same item Shopify applies the best one.

How many discount codes can a customer use at once?

Up to 5 product or order codes plus 1 shipping code per order. To allow fewer, Discount Genie's rejection rules cap codes per checkout, on the Free plan too. See Limit and block discount codes.

Do stacked percentage discounts add up?

Not in Discount Genie product groups: percentages compound. A 20% group and a 10% group give 28% off, not 30%.
