Set up tiered and volume discounts on Shopify

What Shopify does on its own

Shopify's discount settings take one threshold per discount. Its only documented price ladder is volume pricing for B2B catalogs. Each item below links the Shopify page it comes from (checked 2026-10-23).

Shopify can

Shopify can’t

Volume pricing lives in B2B catalogs, which you assign to B2B customers. We found no Shopify page that extends it to regular retail shoppers, and no built-in tier table for a regular discount.

Build a quantity ladder with native discounts

Example ladder: 3 units get 10% off, 6 units get 15%, 10 units get 20%. In Shopify admin, under Discounts:

  1. Create an Amount off products discount with the Automatic discount method: 10% off the products in the ladder, with Minimum quantity of items set to 3.
  2. Create a second automatic discount for the same products: 15% off, minimum quantity 6.
  3. Create a third: 20% off, minimum quantity 10.
  4. Leave the three discounts not combining with each other. Shopify then applies the one that is best for the customer's cart.

This ladder works, with three costs:

  • Slots. Each step is its own automatic discount, so this ladder takes 3 of your 25 slots. A 5-step ladder takes 5.
  • Display. We found no Shopify tier table for regular discounts, so shoppers don't see the ladder on the product page.
  • Edits. Changing the products or dates means editing every step.

If you sell wholesale, check B2B volume pricing first. It holds up to 10 breaks per product in one catalog and runs on Basic and up, not only Plus.

The Discount Genie way

Discount Genie runs on Shopify discount Functions and has two ladder types. Each one keeps the whole ladder in one discount, so a 5-break ladder takes 1 of your 25 automatic slots instead of 5. Discount Genie doesn't change the product price: the discount applies in the cart and at checkout.

Volume discount (quantity breaks). The discount grows with the number of units in the cart.

  • Each break has a start quantity and a percentage or fixed amount off. A break that starts at 3 units applies to a cart with 3 units.
  • The cart gets the highest break it reached, on all counted units, not only the units above the break.
  • Units count per product or per variant. Counting across a collection (mix and match) needs a paid plan.
  • Fill the Ends (optional) field on the last break to cap how many units get its discount. Units past that number get no discount.

Tiered order discount (spend more, save more). The discount comes off the whole order and grows with the cart subtotal, measured before discounts, taxes and shipping. The cart gets the highest tier it passed.

A tier applies only when the subtotal is greater than its amount. A $100 tier applies to a $100.01 cart, not to a $100.00 cart. The tier amount field takes whole numbers only, so to include a cart of exactly $100, set the tier to $99. A $99 tier also qualifies carts from $99.01 up.

Show the ladder on the product page. Add the Volume Table, Volume Break Widget or Tiers Table block in the Shopify theme editor (steps). The blocks don't read the discount: you type the breaks into the block's settings. When you change a break, change it in both places, or the table and the checkout price will disagree.

Plans. The Free plan includes the standard volume discount with up to 5 breaks and the standard tiered order discount, within its limit of 3 basic discounts. Paid plans add advanced volume and tier discounts, B2B volume breaks read per product or variant, product exclusions on tiers, and customer-tag conditions.

FAQ

Can I set up tiered pricing like buy 10 save 15%, buy 25 save 20% without an app?

Yes, with one automatic discount per step, each with its own minimum quantity. Shopify applies the best one for the cart when they don't combine. Each step uses one of your 25 automatic slots. For wholesale buyers, B2B volume pricing holds up to 10 breaks per product on Basic and up.

Can I show a quantity pricing table on the product page?

Shopify's documented native option is B2B volume pricing. Its theme-code page covers how it shows in themes: free themes version 11.0.0 or later display it, and other themes need code added to the theme (help.shopify.com). Discount Genie's Volume Table, Volume Break Widget and Tiers Table blocks show a ladder on retail product pages. You type the breaks into the block, so keep them in step with the discount.

If my tier says $100, does a $100.00 cart get it?

Not in Discount Genie: a tier applies only when the subtotal is greater than its amount, so $100.01 qualifies and $100.00 doesn't. Set the tier to $99 to include $100.00 carts (the tier amount field takes whole numbers only, and a $99 tier also qualifies carts from $99.01 up). Volume breaks differ: a break that starts at 3 units applies to 3 units.

Will tiered discounts push me past Shopify's 25 automatic discount limit?

Automatic discounts, native or from an app, share one limit of 25 (Shopify Help Center). Separately, a store can activate at most 25 discount Functions (shopify.dev). A native ladder uses one automatic slot per step. A Discount Genie volume or tiered order discount keeps the whole ladder in one discount, so as an automatic discount it uses one slot.

Does the bigger discount apply to every unit or only the extra ones?

In a Discount Genie volume discount, the reached break applies to all counted units, not only the units above the break. Fill Ends (optional) on the last break to cap how many units get it. See volume discounts.
