Discounts by customer tag on Shopify
What Shopify does on its own
Shopify decides who gets a discount in each discount's Eligibility section. Tags are not one of the options, but a customer segment can be built on a tag. Each item below links the Shopify page it comes from (checked 2026-10-23).
Shopify can
- Limit a discount code or an automatic discount to all customers, specific customers, customer segments, or markets. Source: help.shopify.com
- Build a customer segment from a tag with the query customer_tags CONTAINS 'VIP'. Tags in segment queries are not case sensitive. Source: help.shopify.com
- Add up to 5 customer segments to one automatic discount. Source: help.shopify.com
- Identify an eligible customer at checkout by a valid email address or phone number. Source: help.shopify.com
- Sell B2B on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Shopify Plus plans. Source: help.shopify.com
- Give B2B buyers on Basic, Grow, and Advanced up to 3 B2B catalogs, quantity rules, and quantity price breaks. Source: help.shopify.com

Shopify can’t
- Pick a customer tag directly as eligibility. The options are all customers, specific customers, customer segments, and markets, so a tag has to go through a segment. Source: help.shopify.com

- Use more than 3 B2B catalogs below Shopify Plus. Source: help.shopify.com

Set up a tag discount with a segment
This works for a VIP tag, a wholesale tag, or any other tag you already use. It needs no app.
- Create a customer segment with the query
customer_tags CONTAINS 'VIP'. Save it, for example as VIP customers. - Create the discount: a code or an automatic discount.
- In Eligibility, choose Customer segments and pick VIP customers.
- Save. Shopify gives the discount to customers in that segment when it identifies them at checkout by email address or phone number.
For several VIP levels, make one segment and one discount per level, for example VIP1 at 10% and VIP2 at 20%. An automatic discount takes at most 5 segments; a code takes up to 100 (Shopify Help Center).
Automatic discounts gained this Eligibility section on 2025-08-06 (Shopify Changelog). Older forum answers that say only codes can target a segment are out of date.
Wholesale pricing without Shopify Plus
Shopify B2B is no longer limited to Plus. It runs on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans, but not on Starter or Retail.
- Basic, Grow, Advanced: companies, quantity rules, quantity price breaks, net terms, and 3 B2B catalogs across all B2B markets. These plans need the new Shopify Markets.
- Plus only: unlimited catalogs, catalogs assigned directly to a company or company location, and deposits.
- Discounts on top: automatic discounts and codes apply as extra discounts on top of catalog prices. To make a discount B2B only, choose a B2B market under Eligibility, Markets.
B2B works by company, not by tag. If your wholesale buyers are tagged customers rather than companies, use a tag segment or Discount Genie's tag condition instead.
Tag discounts with Discount Genie
Discount Genie checks the shopper's tags inside its Shopify discount Function at checkout, so you don't need a segment for each tag. Customer conditions are on the paid Core, Growth, Pro and Scale plans, not on Free. See customer eligibility in the docs.
- Four match modes. Includes all, includes any, excludes all, or excludes any of your tags. Example: excludes any: wholesale gives the discount to everyone except wholesale customers.
- Mix with email conditions. Add exact emails or email domains next to tags, and match all conditions or any of them.
- Most discount types. Tag conditions work in product, order, tiered, Standard and Advanced volume, shipping and BOGO discounts, and in discount groups and rejection rules. In a rejection rule, customer conditions can require a logged-in shopper: tick Require users to be logged-in, and guest checkouts are never rejected by that rule.
- Segments too. You can also pick Shopify segments or specific customers; Discount Genie sets them as Shopify's own eligibility on the discount.
- Login is a checkbox. Tick Require users to be logged-in to give the discount only to logged-in customers. It is off by default on new discounts, and with it off an exclude rule such as excludes any: wholesale also matches guest shoppers.
Wholesale by tag: the B2B (Wholesalers) volume type matches customers by email or email domain only, not by tag. For a wholesale price break keyed to a tag, use a Standard volume discount or a tiered discount with the condition includes any: wholesale.
Tiered VIP levels: if a Gold customer also carries the Silver tag, both tag discounts can match. Give the Silver discount two conditions, includes any: Silver and excludes any: Gold, matched all, so each customer gets one level.
FAQ
Can an automatic discount apply only to customers with a VIP tag?
Yes, through a segment. Build a segment with customer_tags CONTAINS 'VIP' and pick it under Eligibility on the automatic discount. Shopify added eligibility to automatic discounts on 2025-08-06; before that, only codes could target segments.
Do I need Shopify Plus for wholesale pricing?
No. Shopify B2B runs on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus, with 3 B2B catalogs below Plus. Plus adds unlimited catalogs and catalogs assigned directly to a company. Starter and Retail don't include B2B.
How do I give VIP1 customers 10% and VIP2 customers 20% without a code?
Create one segment per tag and one automatic discount per segment. In Discount Genie, use tag conditions and exclude the higher tag from the lower discount, for example includes any: VIP1 and excludes any: VIP2, so one customer doesn't match both.
Why doesn't my tag discount apply for a test customer?
Discount Genie reads tags from the shopper's customer account, so log in as the tagged test customer before checkout. If the discount has Require users to be logged-in ticked, a guest checkout never gets it. See discount not applying.
