How do I set up a BOGO discount in Shopify for Black Friday?

Set up BOGO in Shopify, step by step

Shopify has a built-in Buy X get Y discount, so a plain "buy one, get one free" needs no app. These are the desktop admin steps from Shopify's Buy X get Y help page (checked November 6, 2026). The example is buy 1 T-shirt, get 1 T-shirt free, as a code.

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Discounts, click Create discount, and in the Select discount type menu click Buy X get Y.
2. Under Method, choose Discount code and type a code, for example BOGOBF. For a deal shoppers get without typing, choose Automatic discount and enter a title instead.
3. Under Customer buys, select Minimum quantity of items and enter 1. In Any items from, choose Specific collections and pick T-shirts.
4. Under Customer gets, enter quantity 1, choose the same T-shirts collection, and under At a discounted value choose Free. For "buy one, get one for 50 percent less", choose Percentage and enter 50.
5. Check Set the maximum number of uses per order and enter 1, so a cart of 6 shirts gets 1 free, not 3.
6. Set Eligibility (all customers, specific customers, segments or markets), the code's Maximum discount uses, and the Combinations you allow.
7. Under Active dates, start on November 27 and set an end date of December 1. Times follow your admin's time zone, and a discount with no end date never expires.
8. Click Save, then add two shirts to a cart and enter the code at checkout to check it.

When the buy and get items are the same product or collection, Shopify discounts the lower-priced item the customer picks (Shopify help). Customers must add both items themselves: Shopify never adds the free item to the cart.

Black Friday traps to check first

• Sold-out free items. If the free product's inventory reaches zero, it shows as sold out and nobody can get the deal (Shopify help). Stock the get item for the whole weekend.
• Other product discounts. On every plan but Plus, items in a Buy X get Y deal can't take another product discount. If a shopper enters a product code that touches them, Shopify applies the best overall discount (Shopify help). An order discount can combine with Buy X get Y on eligible stores.
• Minimum amount math. Only items in Customer buys count toward a minimum purchase amount, at full price. An item already reduced by another product discount doesn't count at all (Shopify help).
• Start time. A November 27 start begins at 12:00 a.m. in your store's time zone (Shopify help).

Set up BOGO with Discount Genie

7. Click Save. Read the Summary on the right, then test a cart at checkout (create your first discount).
