Guides Fix a problem
Why is my Shopify discount code not working?
Match the checkout message to the fix
Shopify shows a different message for each kind of failure. The messages below are quoted from Shopify's discounts FAQ and combinations page (checked November 6, 2026).
| Checkout message | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Enter a valid discount code | The code doesn't exist or isn't active right now | Check the spelling, status and Active dates |
| CODE discount code isn't valid for the items in your cart | No cart item is in the code's products or collections | Add the products to the code's Applies to |
| The CODE discount code has already been used | A usage limit is reached, or an unfinished checkout holds the code | Raise the limit, or check for an open checkout |
| Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts | The combination settings don't allow both | Allow the combination on both discounts |
| Some discount codes couldn't be used together. We applied the best combination | Several codes were entered and not all can combine | Expected; set combinations if they should stack |
| A message you didn't write | An app's discount Function rejected the code | Check that app's code rules |
Every reason a Shopify code fails, and the fix
Work down this list in your Shopify admin under Discounts, opening the code that fails. Each step names the setting and the Shopify page it comes from.
- Status and dates. The code must be Active. It starts at 12:00 a.m. on its start date in your admin's time zone and ends at the End date and time you set (Shopify help). A rollout that turns the discount off for some customers also stops it (Shopify help).
- Usage limits. Limit number of times this discount can be used in total and Limit to one per customer (tracked by email or phone) stop repeat uses. Renaming or reactivating a code doesn't reset its usage history (Shopify help).
- Minimum requirements. A minimum purchase amount counts product prices only, never shipping or tax. If the code applies to specific products, only those count. An order code checks the minimum both before and after product discounts (Shopify help).
- Products and purchase type. The cart needs an item in Applies to. A code set to one-time purchases skips subscriptions, and the other way round (Shopify help).
- Eligibility. A code for a customer segment works only for existing customers: a first-time buyer has no profile yet (Shopify help). A code set to some Markets fails for shoppers in the others.
- Combinations. Discounts don't combine by default, and both discounts must allow it. When they can't combine, Shopify applies the best discount for the cart, so your code can lose to an automatic discount (Shopify help).
- Code limit. A customer can use at most 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code on one order. More codes don't apply (Shopify help).
- Buy X get Y items. On every plan but Plus, items in a Buy X get Y deal can't take another product discount (Shopify help).
- Where the order is placed. Combinations work only in the Online Store, the Storefront API and Shopify POS, not in Facebook, Instagram or Google checkouts (Shopify help). Draft order invoices don't accept codes at checkout by default (Shopify help).
- Gift cards and $0 codes. Most discounts can't apply to gift cards (Shopify help). A code worth $0 or 0% might not work at checkout (Shopify help).
- No code box at checkout. The box shows only when the store has at least 1 active code. Shop Pay users must log in first, and some third-party apps hide it (Shopify help).
What Shopify does on its own
Each item links the Shopify page it comes from (checked November 6, 2026).
Shopify can

- Apply the best discount for the cart when two discounts can't combine. Source: help.shopify.com
- Let you test codes at checkout without paying, or with a test order. Source: help.shopify.com

Shopify can’t

- Restrict a code to some sales channels. Source: help.shopify.com
- Accept more than 5 product or order codes on one order. Source: help.shopify.com

Test every code before Black Friday
Run this test for each Black Friday code before November 27, 2026.
- Add products the code applies to, then products it shouldn't, to a cart.
- Go to checkout, enter the code, and check the discount line. You can close checkout without paying (Shopify help).
- Enter a second code or keep an automatic discount active, to see what combines.
- Try an address in each market the code is limited to.
- For a full run, place a test order with Shopify's Test payment gateway or Shopify Payments test mode. Customers can't place live orders while test mode is on (Shopify help).
Fix it with Discount Genie
Discount Genie is a Shopify discount app by Shopstack. Its not-applying checklist covers its own discounts:
- Check the uses. Open Discounts, then View my discounts, and read the discount's Performance panel.
- 0 uses, no error. Another automatic discount that doesn't combine is winning. Deactivate the one you don't need in Shopify admin under Discounts, then test with a fresh cart.
- Subtotal qualifier. It checks "greater than", not "greater than or equal to". For a discount that starts at $500, enter 499.99.
- Your own message at checkout. A Discount Genie rejection rule blocked the code. Open Rejection rules and check its conditions.
Promo code rejection rules are on every plan, the basic free plan included. They block every code for a sitewide sale, lower the codes allowed per order (for example to 2), or block a code by name, with a checkout message you write. They drop the whole code, never some lines. Paid plans cost $0.99/mo for 3 months.
Shopify vs Discount Genie for failing codes
| Need | Shopify | Discount Genie |
|---|---|---|
| Know why a code failed | Checkout message per failure | The same, plus your own message for codes a rejection rule blocks |

| Fewer than 5 codes per order | No setting | Rejection rule (every plan) |
| Test a code | Checkout without paying, test orders, shareable links | Same Shopify checkout test |
| Price | Included with Shopify | Basic free plan (up to 3 basic discounts); paid plans $0.99/mo for 3 months |
FAQ
Why does Shopify say "Enter a valid discount code"?
The code doesn't exist or isn't active right now (Shopify help). Check the spelling, that the status is Active, and the start and end dates in your admin's time zone.
Why is my code "not valid for the items in your cart"?
No item in the cart is in the products or collections the code applies to. Add those products to the code, or tell shoppers which items qualify.
Why does my code work alone but not with my automatic discount?
The two don't allow each other in Combinations, so Shopify applies the better one (Shopify help). Allow the combination on both. See combine and stack discounts.
Why does a new customer's code fail when it targets a segment?
Segments hold only existing customer profiles. A first-time buyer joins after their first order, so a segment code fails for them (Shopify help). Use All customers for a first-order code.
How many discount codes can a customer use on one Shopify order?
Up to 5 product or order codes plus 1 shipping code, and only when each one allows combining (Shopify help). To allow fewer, see limit and block discount codes.
