How do I generate 1,000 unique discount codes in Shopify?

What "1,000 unique discount codes" means

You want 1,000 different code strings that all give the same deal, so each person on an email list or each influencer gets a code of their own. A shared code like WELCOME15 is the opposite: one string that anyone can pass around. With 1,000 separate codes you can tell which person or campaign used which code.

A code often looks like a prefix plus random characters, for example BF26-7QK2M9X. The numbers that matter for 1,000 codes:

  • Shopify's API: 1,000 codes at 250 per request is 4 requests. A 4,200-subscriber list is 17 requests (4,200 / 250 = 16.8, rounded up).
  • Shopify's store limit: 20,000,000 unique codes per store, so 1,000 codes use 0.005% of it.
  • Klaviyo's API: it takes up to 1,000 codes per job, so Discount Genie sends a 2,500-code job as 3 uploads (1,000 + 1,000 + 500).

What Shopify gives you, step by step

The Shopify admin makes one code per discount. Its discount page offers a single Generate code button and no way to ask for a number of codes (Shopify's amount off help page, checked November 7, 2026). These are the desktop steps to make one random code, which you repeat for every code you need.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Discounts, click Create discount, and in the Select discount type menu click Amount off products or Amount off orders.
  2. Under Method, select Discount code.
  3. In the Discount code section, click Generate code for a random code, or type your own name.
  4. In the Value section, pick Percentage or Fixed amount and enter the amount.
  5. Under Maximum discount uses, check Limit number of times this discount can be used in total or Limit to one per customer.
  6. Set Eligibility, Combinations and Active dates, then click Save.

Doing this 1,000 times means 1,000 separate discounts in your admin, so it is not a real option past a few dozen codes.

Shopify can't import a list of codes either. Its export page says "You can't import discount codes to your store using CSV files" (Shopify's export page, checked November 7, 2026).

Every way to get 1,000 unique codes

  • One shared code with usage limits. Use it when you only need to cap redemptions. Set Limit number of times this discount can be used in total to 1,000 and Limit to one per customer. It is one string, so it is not unique: anyone who sees it can use it.
  • Codes made by hand. Use it for 10 or 20 codes, for example a handful of influencers. Each code is its own discount, so 1,000 codes is 1,000 trips through the steps above.
  • The Admin API. Use it when you have a developer. The `discountRedeemCodeBulkAdd` mutation adds up to 250 codes per request to a code discount you already made, and it works in the background. 1,000 codes takes 4 requests. The app needs the write_discounts access scope. It is a developer job, not a screen in your admin.
  • Klaviyo. Use it when the codes go straight to your Klaviyo emails and SMS. Klaviyo creates unique, single-use Shopify coupon codes, and each recipient gets their own (Klaviyo's unique coupon codes guide, checked November 7, 2026). For a campaign you generate at least as many codes as you have recipients, and a large batch can take up to several hours.
  • An app with a bulk code generator. Use it when you want the codes in your own hands, as a downloaded list, and also in Klaviyo. This is what Discount Genie does.

Generate bulk unique codes with Discount Genie

Discount Genie is a Shopify discount app by Shopstack, built on Shopify Functions. Its Bulk code generator makes one discount with many codes, either randomly generated or uploaded from your own CSV file. Bulk codes need a paid plan, so they are not part of the basic free plan (up to 3 basic discounts).

  1. In Shopify admin, open Discount Genie, then click Bulk code generator in the app menu. The page is titled Bulk discount codes.
  2. Under Create discounts in bulk like a Genie, pick the discount type. The form is headed, for example, Create order discount codes in bulk (bulk code docs).
  3. Enter a Title. Shoppers never see it.
  4. Under Code settings > Code generation, choose Randomly generate codes.
  5. In Number of codes, enter 1000.
  6. In Character length, enter 7 or more; the minimum is 7. Under Code character type, choose Numeric, Alphanumeric or Letters.
  7. Optional: fill Prefix (optional), for example BF26, and Suffix (optional). Read the Code preview to see the shape of a code.
  8. Under Code destination, choose CSV file to download the codes, or Klaviyo to send them to Klaviyo.
  9. Set up the discount itself below, the same way as a single discount, then click Save. The job shows Generating... while Discount Genie creates the codes.
  10. When it finishes, go to View my bulk discount codes, find the job and click Export. Choose Export as .csv, then Download .csv.

Two more things to know:

  • The size check: the form refuses a number of codes larger than the number of possible codes for your length and type. Alphanumeric has 36 characters, numeric 10 and letters 26. At 7 characters that is about 78.4 billion alphanumeric codes, 8.0 billion letter codes and 10,000,000 numeric codes, so 1,000 fits every setting.
  • Your own codes: choose Upload a CSV file instead. Put all codes in one column and make the first row a header that says code or codes. Discount Genie ignores duplicate codes and tells you how many.

Send the codes to Klaviyo. Connect Klaviyo from Discount Genie Settings, then pick Klaviyo under Code destination (Klaviyo steps). The Klaviyo option is for paid plans; without it the choice is greyed out and marked Coming soon.

  • Title rule: when you export to Klaviyo, the Title can only contain letters, numbers and underscores, for example VIP_WELCOME_15. Use it as the coupon name in your Klaviyo emails.
  • Batches: Klaviyo's API takes up to 1,000 codes per job, so Discount Genie sends larger jobs as several uploads.
  • Status: the job shows Klaviyo: Pending, then Klaviyo: Syncing…, then Klaviyo: Synced ✓. Confirmation can take about 20 minutes, and Verify now checks sooner.
  • Keep it stocked: turn on Automatically refill codes when running low, then set a Refill threshold and a Refill amount. It is off by default.

Discount Genie's paid plans include all 11 discount types. New stores pay $0.99/mo for the first 3 months on any monthly paid plan, then Core $29.99, Growth $59.99, Pro $79.99 or Scale $99.99 a month. The plan offered depends on the store's Shopify plan.

Worked examples

  • 1,000 influencer codes, downloaded: Number of codes 1000, Character length 7, Alphanumeric, Prefix INF, destination CSV file. Export the CSV and hand one code to each influencer.
  • 4,200 email subscribers, Klaviyo: Number of codes 4500, which leaves a buffer over the 4,200 recipients. Discount Genie sends 4,500 codes as 5 uploads (4 × 1,000 + 500). Use the Klaviyo coupon in your campaign.
  • 500 codes you already have: a CSV with one code column, uploaded with Upload a CSV file. If 20 of the 500 rows repeat an earlier code, 480 codes are created and the app tells you 20 were skipped.

Setups to copy

Each setup uses only settings named in the steps above.

  • Black Friday VIP list. Order type, Randomly generate codes, 1000 codes, prefix BFCM, destination Klaviyo, Title BFCM_VIP. Add an end date in the discount setup.
  • Influencer program. Any discount type, 200 codes, prefix with the program name, destination CSV file. In View my bulk discount codes, open View codes on the job to see each code's Used count and who sells.
  • Welcome series that keeps codes in stock. Klaviyo destination, Automatically refill codes when running low, a Refill threshold of 50 and a Refill amount of 500.

Test it before launch

  1. Generate a small job first. Make 10 codes with the real prefix and look at the Code preview.
  2. Redeem one. Put a code from the export into a test cart and check the discount line at checkout.
  3. Check the count. In View my bulk discount codes, compare the job's Codes number with what you asked for.
  4. For Klaviyo, wait for Synced. Send your test email only after the job shows Klaviyo: Synced ✓.
