How do I cap a Shopify discount at a maximum amount, like 20% off up to $100?

What "20% off, up to $100" means

You want a percentage discount that grows with the cart until it reaches a dollar ceiling, then stops. A shopper buying $300 gets $60 off. A shopper buying $800 gets $100 off, not $160. The ceiling protects your margin on big orders, for example on a Black Friday sitewide code.

There are two versions of the ceiling, and they give different totals:

  • Per item: each product's discount stops at the cap. Three jackets at $120 with 20% off, capped at $15 per item, take $45 off.
  • Whole order: one cap for everything in the order. The same three jackets with 20% off, capped at $50 for the order, take $50 off.

In the second example 20% of $360 is $72, and the cap cuts it to $50. Below, each tool is marked with the version it gives you.

What Shopify gives you instead, step by step

Shopify's Amount off products and Amount off orders discounts let you pick Percentage or Fixed amount, and nothing else about the value (Shopify's amount off help page, checked November 7, 2026). These are the desktop steps for the closest workaround, a fixed dollar amount off with a minimum purchase, for example $20 off orders over $100.

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Discounts, click Create discount, and in the Select discount type menu click Amount off orders.
  2. Under Method, choose Discount code and type a code, for example SAVE20. For a deal shoppers get without typing, choose Automatic discount and enter a title.
  3. In the Value section, select Fixed amount and enter 20. A fixed amount never grows with the cart.
  4. Under Minimum requirements, select Minimum purchase amount and enter 100. Shipping and taxes aren't counted.
  5. For a discount code, under Maximum discount uses, check Limit number of times this discount can be used in total to cap how many orders get the deal, or Limit to one per customer. Shopify's steps for automatic discounts list no usage limits.
  6. Set Eligibility, the Combinations you allow, and your Active dates. A discount with no end date never expires.
  7. Click Save, then test a cart that meets the minimum and one that doesn't.

For a deal on specific items, choose Amount off products in step 1, then under Applies to pick specific products or collections. Check Only apply discount once per order to limit a fixed amount to one use per order. Otherwise it applies to all eligible products in the order.

Each item links the Shopify page it comes from (checked November 7, 2026).

Shopify can

  • Require a minimum purchase amount or a minimum quantity of items before the discount applies. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Limit how many times a discount is used in total, or to one use per customer. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Apply a fixed amount once per order on specific products or collections. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Keep an order from going below $0: the order value can't go below $0 USD. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Add discount behavior its standard settings don't offer, such as a cap, with a custom Shopify Function or an app. Shopify describes Functions as a way to "create discount functionality that isn't offered out of the box with Shopify". Source: shopify.dev

Shopify can’t

  • Stop a percentage discount at a maximum dollar amount. The Value section offers only Percentage or Fixed amount. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Cap a percentage discount with its standard discount value input. The Admin API's value input for a product discount takes a percentage, a fixed amount or a quantity, with no maximum-amount field (checked against API version 2026-10). Source: shopify.dev
  • Count dollars in a usage limit. The Limit number of times this discount can be used in total setting counts redemptions, not money. Source: help.shopify.com

Which Shopify workaround fits

  • Fixed amount off. Use it when "up to $100" really means "$100 off". Every shopper above your minimum gets the same amount, so small carts get a much bigger share off than big ones.
  • Fixed amount plus a minimum purchase. Use it for "$20 off orders over $100". The minimum stops tiny orders from getting the full amount. It doesn't make the amount scale with the cart.
  • Usage limits. A total-uses limit or one use per customer caps how often the offer runs. It doesn't cap how much each use takes off.

None of these keeps the percentage and cuts it off at a dollar value. That needs an app.

Cap a percentage discount with Discount Genie

Discount Genie is a Shopify discount app by Shopstack, built on Shopify Functions. Its Product and Order discounts have a checkbox for a maximum amount, and it appears when the value is a Percentage (a Fixed amount needs no cap). The cap is included in the basic free plan, which covers up to 3 basic discounts.

  1. In Shopify admin, open Discount Genie and click Discounts.
  2. Under Create discounts like a Genie, click Order to cap the whole order, or Product to cap each item (create your first discount).
  3. Under Method, choose Discount code or Automatic discount. For a code, type your own or click Generate random code.
  4. Under Value, choose Percentage and enter 20.
  5. Check the cap box. On an Order discount it reads Set a maximum amount to discount off order. On a Product discount it reads Set a maximum amount to discount off each eligible product.
  6. Enter the cap, for example 100. The field shows your store's currency symbol and code.
  7. On a Product discount, if a list appears next to the amount, leave it on Discount off each product variant cannot exceed, the per-item default. Then pick the products the discount covers.
  8. Set who gets it and the Combinations you allow, then click Save. Read the Summary on the right and test a cart at checkout.

Where the cap applies:

  • Order card: one cap for the whole order. Discount Genie works out the percentage of the cart subtotal and, if that is more than your cap, takes off the cap instead.
  • Product card, per item (the default): the cap is checked for each item. Discount Genie takes the smaller of the percentage and the cap off every unit. This protects margin on expensive single items.
  • Currency: you enter the cap in your store's currency. For a shopper paying in another currency, Discount Genie converts it at the rate Shopify gives it for that checkout.

Discount Genie's paid plans include all 11 discount types. New stores pay $0.99/mo for the first 3 months on any monthly paid plan, then Core $29.99, Growth $59.99, Pro $79.99 or Scale $99.99 a month. The plan offered depends on the store's Shopify plan.

Worked examples

All three use a 20% discount with a $100 cap on the Order card, or a $15 cap on the Product card.

  • Order card, $300 cart: 20% is $60. That is under the $100 cap, so the shopper gets $60 off.
  • Order card, $800 cart: 20% is $160. That is over the cap, so the shopper gets $100 off.
  • Product card, 3 jackets at $120 each, $15 cap per item: 20% of $120 is $24, over the cap, so each jacket gets $15 off. The shopper gets $45 off, where the uncapped discount would take $72.

Setups to copy

Each setup uses only settings named in the steps above.

  • Sitewide Black Friday code, 20% off up to $100. Order card, Discount code (for example BF20), Percentage 20, order cap 100. Big carts stop at $100, small carts keep the full 20%.
  • Influencer code, 15% off up to $50. Order card, Discount code, Percentage 15, order cap 50. Add a total-uses limit so the code can't run forever.
  • Premium products, 25% off up to $40 each. Product card, Automatic discount, Percentage 25, cap 40 per item, then pick the premium products. A $400 item gets $40 off, not $100.

Test it before launch

Place a test order for each of these with your saved discount (and its code, if you chose the Discount code method), using a cart that matches your cap. For a 20% discount with a $100 cap on the Order card:

  1. Under the cap: a $300 cart. Expect $60 off.
  2. Just over the cap: a $550 cart. 20% is $110, so expect $100 off.
  3. Far over the cap: an $800 cart. Expect $100 off, the same as the $550 cart.
  4. Your most common cart. Check that the discount line at checkout matches what you expect before you announce the sale.

FAQ

Can Shopify cap a percentage discount at a maximum amount?

No. The Value section of an amount off discount takes a percentage or a fixed amount, with no maximum (Shopify help). Use a fixed amount, or an app or custom Function that adds a cap.

How do I give 20% off, up to $100, in Shopify?

Shopify's standard discount settings have no cap; a custom Shopify Function or an app can add one. In Discount Genie, create an Order discount, choose Percentage, enter 20, check Set a maximum amount to discount off order and enter 100. See the steps above.

Is the cap on the basic free plan of Discount Genie?

Yes. The maximum-amount setting is included in the basic free plan, which covers up to 3 basic discounts. New stores pay $0.99/mo for the first 3 months on any monthly paid plan.

What is the difference between a cap per item and a cap on the whole order?

A per-item cap limits what each unit gets, so the total grows with quantity. A whole-order cap limits the total no matter how many items are in the cart. The worked examples show both.

Does a total usage limit cap the discount amount?

No. A usage limit counts how many times a discount is redeemed, not how many dollars it takes off (Shopify help).
