Exclude a product from a discount code on Shopify

What Shopify does on its own

Shopify lets you choose which products a code applies to. It has no field that lists products a code must skip. Each item below links the Shopify page it comes from (checked 2026-10-31).

Shopify can

  • Apply an amount off products code to specific products or specific collections, in the Applies to section. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Exclude products from a collection, one by one or by condition, or exclude every product in another collection. Exclusions override any inclusion. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Build an automated collection from a tag condition that has the options includes and does not include. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Count only the products a code applies to toward its minimum purchase amount. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Let a discount Function leave chosen cart lines out of an order discount's subtotal. Source: shopify.dev

Shopify can’t

  • Exclude products in the discount itself. The discount help page has no exclude option (help center, 2026-10). Source: help.shopify.com
  • Point an amount off orders code at specific products or collections. Applies to is only in the product discount steps (help center, 2026-10). Source: help.shopify.com
  • Use one source to exclude single products and another collection at the same time. Source: help.shopify.com
  • Have more than 5 collections that exclude another collection in one store. Source: help.shopify.com

Exclude products from a product code

You don't tell the code what to skip. You give it a collection that already leaves those products out. Shopify's collection editor has an Exclude option for this. The admin steps below are for desktop.

  1. From your Shopify admin (desktop), go to Products > Collections and click Add collection. Name it, for example Discount eligible.
  2. In the Products source, click Add condition and add a condition that every product you sell matches, for example Price is greater than 0. A product whose variants are all free fails that condition, so it stays out.
  3. In the same Products source, click Exclude. Then either click Add products (desktop) and pick the products to skip, or open the Products drop-down, choose Collection, and pick a collection of products to skip. One source can't do both. Shopify allows "a maximum of 5 collections that exclude another collection" per store.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Create or edit the code. Under Select discount type, choose Amount off products. In Applies to, choose Specific collections and pick Discount eligible.
  6. Save, then test a cart with an excluded product and the code.

Gift card products priced above $0 also match Price is greater than 0, so they join Discount eligible. If you don't want gift cards discounted, add them to the Exclude list too.

Exclusions always win over inclusions, so an excluded product stays out even when it matches your condition (Shopify help).

Tag method. To manage it from each product page, add a tag such as no-discount to the products to skip. Then build the collection with a tag condition set to does not include that tag (Shopify help). If the same source also has the Price is greater than 0 condition, select Match all conditions so a product must match both (Shopify help). New products join the collection unless you tag them.

Minimum purchase. Only the products a code applies to count toward its minimum purchase amount (Shopify help). If Discount eligible leaves out a $60 product, that $60 doesn't help a shopper reach a $50 minimum.

To keep codes off products that are already on sale, see keep codes off sale items. That method uses the compare-at price and has its own limits.

Why order codes can't exclude products

An Amount off orders code has no Applies to section in Shopify's discount steps, so you can't point it at a collection (help center, 2026-10; Shopify help). You have three ways around it:

  • Switch to a product code. Make it an Amount off products code on your Discount eligible collection.
  • Use a discount Function. A Function can list cart lines to leave out of an order discount's subtotal (shopify.dev). Stores not on Plus run Functions through a public app (shopify.dev).
  • Use an app that builds that Function for you, such as Discount Genie (next section).

Exclude products from an order code with Discount Genie

Discount Genie's Amount off order discount has a Set product exclusions section. It runs on Shopify Functions for discounts, no code. It works for a discount code and for an automatic discount. Product exclusions are on the Core plan and up, not on Free or Starter.

  1. In Discount Genie, create an Amount off order discount.
  2. Under Method, choose Discount code and type the code.
  3. Set the discount value and any cart or customer conditions.
  4. Under Additional settings, open Set product exclusions, choose Exclude products, then Add exclusion.
  5. Under Exclude by, choose Collection and pick the collection of products to skip, for example No discount.
  6. Save, then test a cart with a product from that collection and the code.

Discount Genie tells Shopify to leave the excluded lines out of the order subtotal, so the code's amount comes off the rest.

Cart conditions. By default, excluded products don't count toward the discount's cart conditions, such as a minimum amount. Tick Excluded products count towards cart qualifiers to count them.

What it doesn't do. The exclusion lives on the Discount Genie discount. It doesn't change codes you made in Shopify or in other apps. To reject other codes when a product is in the cart, see block and limit discount codes.

FAQ

Can I exclude a product from a discount code on Shopify?

Not in the discount itself: Shopify's discount settings have no exclude list (help center, 2026-10). Make the code an amount off products code and point it at a collection that leaves the product out. See exclude products from a product code.

Can I exclude a collection from a discount code?

Yes, for a product code. Build a collection with a condition every product matches, then use its Exclude option to exclude the other collection. Point the code at the new collection. Shopify allows "a maximum of 5 collections that exclude another collection" per store.

Can I exclude products from an amount off order code?

Not with Shopify's settings: an order code has no Applies to section. A discount Function in a public app can leave chosen lines out of the order subtotal. Discount Genie's amount off order discount has product exclusions on the Core plan and up.

Can I exclude a product from every discount at once?

Not with one Shopify setting. Each product code needs to point at a collection that leaves the product out, and order codes can't. Discount Genie's exclusions apply only to its own discounts.
